IBF & WBA to investigate Khan-Peterson result

Amir Khan could see his defeat to Lamont Peterson overturned after the WBA and IBF opted to hold an inquiry into the controversial bout.

Khan lost his light-welterweight titles after being deducted two points by referee Joe Cooper for pushing. The Brit claimed afterwards that the referee had cost him the bout; without that punishment, the Brit would have kept his two belts.

Reports at the weekend suggested that the IBF had thrown out Khan's appeal - but now Richard Schaefer, chief executive of Khan's promoters Golden Boy, says a January hearing will be held.

"We have filed an official appeal which will trigger a thorough investigation from the IBF and WBA," said Schaefer.

"I've been given an update by the IBF and WBA. They both want the appeal in New York on 18 and 19 January. They will make their decision on whether the outcome should be overturned, should stand or if there needs to be a rematch. There is clear outrage against the officiating and something needs to be done."
