- Floyd Mayweather Jnr v Miguel Cotto
Floyd shuns Pacquiao for Cotto clash
Hopes of a Floyd Mayweather Jnr-Manny Pacquiao showdown have again faded after the American announced he has agreed to fight Miguel Cotto for his WBA light-middleweight title on May 5.
The fight the boxing world continues to crave remains shrouded in doubt, with Mayweather now focusing his thoughts on taking Cotto's strap at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas before serving an 87-day prison sentence for a domestic violence conviction.
Mayweather's sentence was delayed by Las Vegas authorities, seemingly clearing the path for a super-fight with Pacquiao. However, barriers continue to prevent the deal from being agreed - Mayweather is thought to be unwilling to commit to a 50/50 split, while Pacquiao's camp want longer to promote the fight.
With negotiations at an impasse, at least for now, Mayweather's team have moved quickly to secure their man another challenge: Cotto at 154lbs.
Mayweather, who last fought at light-middleweight when he outpointed Oscar De La Hoya via a disputed split decision in 2007, said: "Miguel Cotto is a world-class fighter who can never be taken for granted and continues to prove he is one of the best in boxing.
"It will be a challenge for me to compete with him at this weight, but this is the type of test I thrive on and gives me the motivation to train even harder. I have no doubt in my mind that my title belt collection will increase once again."
Cotto, who returned to prominence after he gained revenge for his 2008 defeat by Antonio Margarito by beating the Mexican to retain his belt in December, said: "I am here to fight the biggest names in boxing. I've never ducked anyone or any challenge in front of me. That is what the sport of boxing is all about. On May 5 I will convincingly beat Floyd Mayweather."
