Khan plans to fight Mayweather 'within 12-15 months'

Amir Khan has predicted he will share the same ring as Floyd Mayweather Jr. by the end of 2012.

Khan is determined to step on the career accelerator following his thrilling victory over Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas, which made him a huge hit with the American boxing fan base. The WBA light-welterweight champion now wants to take on the sport's biggest names in order to build his legacy.

Next up for Khan is a fight in Manchester on April 16, likely to be against Paul McCloskey or Lamont Peterson. The Briton admits McCloskey would be the preferred opponent, but both camps are currently disputing the terms of agreement.

Victory would see Khan move on to a bout with the winner of Devon Alexander and Timothy Bradley, after which the Freddie Roach-trained pugilist would make serious approaches to the Mayweather camp.

"My dream is to fight the best out there. I want to be the best fighter in the world so to do that you have to beat the best out there," Khan told Sky Sports News. "Floyd Mayweather is a guy that, in the future, it could happen, I'd never fight Manny Pacquiao but I want a big name.

"I've got this fight first on April 16, and then we move onto a unification fight with the winner of Devon Alexander and Timothy Bradley. Then maybe I move up to 147lbs.

"That Mayweather fight could happen in the next 12-15 months."
