Sebastian Vettel is confident the setup of his Red Bull is going in the right direction after the first day of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix, but is aware it could all change with rain later in the weekend.

Vettel set the second fastest time of the afternoon session behind Lewis Hamilton, but is expecting track conditions to change ahead of qualifying.

"It was so-so," he told reporters. "This morning I wasn't too happy, but this afternoon I was happier. We were able to improve the cars, but definitely we need to make another step.

"It seemed to be very hot today. The circuit, it was very slippery. Arguably that's not going to be the case tomorrow and Sunday as there's some rain on the way or rain forecast. It changes here pretty quickly so we'll see tomorrow."

Vettel looked to have superior long-run pace to the McLaren and said he was pleased with the performance of the tyres on heavy fuel.

"The long run was pretty good, I was pretty happy with that," he added. "They didn't fall apart. I haven't checked what the others did, but ours seem OK."
