14.00 All the cars get away cleanly on the installation lap. 13.59 Di Resta, Bianchi, Chilton and Grosjean are on medium tyres. 13.58 The drivers are all belted in and the engines are about to be fired up. 13.55 The sun is still beating down on the circuit ahead of the race. Track temperature is 29C, which is about twice as hot as it was when the drivers did their simulation runs in practice. 13.52 Anton asks: "Here's a thought about strategy. Since everyone has all their dry tyres available for use, would it be sensible for anyone to just go for broke, drive the wheels off their car, and use up as many sets as they might need to?" Pit stop time is really costly. So we're expecting one or two stops. 13.51 Lotus' Alan Permane says his simulations say Vettel will disappear into the distance and doesn't think Raikkonen is really in contention for the win. He's more hopeful of a podium. 13.49 Red Bull has never won at Montreal, so that will give some hope to Ferrari, Mercedes and Lotus fans, but the car has looked good all weekend. Straight-line speed could be a weakness for Vettel and Webber, especially as it's such a strength for Mercedes. 13.48 All the cars are now on the grid and the VIPs and hangers-on are starting to be shepherded away. 13.47 Anton asks: "It's obvious Vettel would be the favorite since he's sitting in his favorite place to be, but are there any other drivers who could challenge for the top step along with Alonso?" Hopefully! Mercedes all depends on tyre degradation (but I doubt it) but if we have a few well-timed safety cars it could mix things up. Alonso is probably his biggest contender, but don't rule out Webber if he has a decent start. 13.43 Dennis has been in touch via email with a weather forecast: "I just checked the weather radar at the McGill station and the screen looks clear all the way to Ottawa and beyond, so it could be a dry race from start to finish." 13.39 The Mercedes will also be under scrutiny during the race to see if they can look after their tyres a little better than they did in Spain and Bahrain. It would be good to see Hamilton mix it with Vettel away from the start so that the Red Bull doesn't run away with it too early on. 13.38 Fernando Alonso is the other one to keep an eye on. He is confident his car will be much better in the race and in the drier warmer conditions, so could be a contender for a win if he can manage his tyres better than the cars in front. 13.36 One driver who may choose to one-stop is Kimi Raikkonen, who starts 10th after a grid penalty. If he can pick his way through the traffic and still look after his tyres he could become a contender for a podium. 13.35 It's an interesting grid with Vettel on pole, Hamilton second and Bottas (in the Williams!) third. But strategy will be key if it remains dry and we are expecting the front runners to opt for a two-stop. 13.30 Welcome to ESPN's live coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix. The race is just 30 minutes away and, believe it or not, it's actually quite sunny in Montreal. However, rain is still a risk this afternoon and we should be set for an interesting race whatever the weather. |
Lap 1 |
Vettel gets a clean start and leads away ahead of Hamilton and Rosberg. Bottas drops to fifth and has Alonso all over him. Alonso attacks Bottas at turn eight, can't make it stick there but tries again at turn 10 and still can't get by. Now Alonso finds a way past at the chicane. The Williams is under pressure from Vergne now. |
Lap 2 |
Vettel leads by 2.0s already. Hamilton 0.9s ahead of Rosberg. Raikkonen is still tenth after his start. Massa up to 14th, Button up to 15th. |
Lap 3 |
Vettel is looking like he can run off and hide here. He is already 2.8s ahead of Hamilton. Alonso is 1.8s off Webber but faster on that last lap than the Red Bull. Bottas holding onto sixth for now, but has a train of cars behind him. |
Lap 4 |
Vettel putting the hammer down and is 3.2s ahead. Hamilton 1.6s ahead of Rosberg and Webber 0.6s off the back of the second Mercedes. Vergne is settling in behind the Williams. He was 0.3s off as they crossed the line, but looks like he is struggling to find a way past even with DRS. |
Lap 5 |
Vettel now leads by 3.8s. The Force India drivers are already being told to keep an eye on brake temperatures. Very crucial around here. Vettel was 0.7s faster than the Mercedes on that last lap. |
Lap 6 |
Vergne finds a way past Bottas into turn one. The Williams now comes under pressure from Sutil but the Force India spins trying to pass in turn three. Sutil spins twice, but all the other cars manage to avoid him. Sutil in more trouble as Maldonado tries to attack and loses out. Damage to Maldonado's front wing but Sutil has dropped to13th. |
Lap 7 |
Vettel leads by 4.3s. There was no contact between Sutil and Bottas, but the Force India lost it trying to pass on the kerbs. |
Lap 8 |
Raikkonen now attacking Ricciardo for eighth. He needs to find a way past if he wants to contend for a podium this afternoon but his car looks a handful in the Toro Rosso's wake. Massa is also having a look at Hulkenberg.Good racing in the midfield if not at the front. |
Lap 9 |
Raikkonen is complaining about an issue and the team is telling him to push his brake balance forward. Di Resta is being given a hurry up. He's 16th but his team is telling him his mediums should be in much better shape than the super-softs on the cars around him. |
Lap 10 |
Vettel leads by 5.1s. Sutil pits. Massa passes Hulkenberg into turn one to move up to 10th. The Ferrari is now on the back of Raikkonen. |
Lap 11 |
A replay shows Vettel brushed the wall at turn four on the last lap. He's still 5.5s clear. Raikkonen defending well from Massa, but it looks like the Ferrari has the pace to get by as he has a lunge into the final chicane and turn one. |
Lap 12 |
Sutil told he has damage to the rear wing after that contact with Maldonado. Raikkonen passes Ricciardo into turn one. He needed to get that done as Massa was all over the back of him. The Ferrari is now attacking the Toro Rosso. |
Lap 13 |
Vettel now leads by 7.4s with Hamilton 5.0s ahead of Rosberg. Massa passes Ricciardo into the chicane as the Toro Rosso dives into the pits for new tyres. Alonso is now closing on Webber for fourth. |
Lap 14 |
Webber pits for fresh tyres after 13 laps. The Mercedes are still out there and Hamilton is just about starting to come to terms with Vettel's pace. Perez also pits for medium tyres. |
Lap 15 |
I was a little bit premature with that last entry. Vettel was 0.4s faster than Hamilton on that last lap. Rosberg pits and just comes out ahead of Webber. Mercedes just managed to cover the undercut from Webber. Bottas has also pitted. Maldonado is being investigated after rear-ending Sutil. |
Lap 16 |
Hamilton faster on the last lap and closes the gap to 7.2s to Vettel. Hamilton is still quicker than Rosberg so can stay out as long as that is the case. |
Lap 17 |
Vettel pits. Maldonado is given a drive-through penalty. A quick stop for Vettel as Alonso also pits. Hamilton now leads. Now Rosberg and Webber are lapping faster than Hamilton so he will have to pit soon. |
Lap 18 |
Rosberg is told that the rear casing temperature is in the danger zone. Webber is putting the pressure on behind him. Massa pits. Hamilton has a 18.5s lead over Rosberg at the moment so needs to pit soon so as not to lose a place. |
Lap 19 |
Hamilton is sticking out there and is 6.1s ahead of Vettel. Webber has dropped off Rosberg a bit and is getting out of the Mercedes wake. Maybe his car is overheating. |
Lap 20 |
Now Hamilton pits. Medium tyres go on and he comes out comfortably ahead of Rosberg and Webber. That worked well for him as he now has much fresher tyres. Meanwhile, Vettel is galloping away into the distance. Webber has definitely dropped off a bit from Rosberg and is still keeping out of the wake of the Mercedes. Now Alonso is starting to appear in his rear-view mirrors |
Lap 21 |
Raikkonen is told to go as long as he can on these tyres. He's currently sixth but has yet to pit. Gutierrez is currently losing a lot of positions on old super-softs. He might also be attempting a one-stop. |
Lap 22 |
Massa attacks Sutil for 11th but cannot find a way past in turn one. Massa is on super-softs, Sutil on mediums. Raikkonen is told fuel consumption is higher than expected. |
Lap 23 |
Now Raikkonen pits as he got passed by Vergne. Mediums go on but there's a problem on the right rear tyre and he loses more time. Not good for the Lotus. The rear jack went down before the rear tyres went on. |
Lap 24 |
Vettel is romping away with this one and 13.7s clear at the front. The best battle is developing between Webber and Rosberg, with the Red Bull running closer again now. Button loses two places in two corners and could well have a problem down in 11th, He hasn't pitted yet so maybe his tyres have gone over the cliff. |
Lap 25 |
Massa still trying to pass Sutil but gets blocked off again. |
Lap 26 |
Vettel leads by 13.3s with Hamilton 5.1s ahead of Rosberg. Massa tries to pass Sutil again at turn one but can't make the move stick for ninth. |
Lap 27 |
Webber attempts to pass Rosberg but can't out brake the Mercedes into the final chicane. He now has Alonso to deal with behind him. The Red Bull looks like the fastest car of that trio but can't find a way past the Mercedes. A lack of straight-line speed is the issue, even with DRS. |
Lap 28 |
It looks like Vettel is setting fastest sector times for fun. He is 15.1s clear now. Button now pits for mediums after some very slow laps trying to eke life out of those super-softs. He's attempting a one-stopper. |
Lap 29 |
Di Resta and Grosjean are the only two in the top ten yet to stop. They both started on medium tyres. Alonso is definitely in this battle with Webber and Rosberg now. He's sat there waiting in case he can nab a position should the cars in front make a mistake. |
Lap 30 |
Rosberg squeezes Webber as the Red Bull tries to pass into the chicane. Webber tries again into turn one and forces the Mercedes late on the brakes and wide on the exit, but Rosberg just about holds on to the position. |
Lap 31 |
Webber tries to pass into the hairpin and sets up a pass into the chicane. Good move. Alonso saved his KERS and closed in too to make the pass in turn one. Rosberg loses two positions in two corners. Hamilton has a 10.9s lead over Webber but the Red Bull is off the leash and moving very quickly. |
Lap 32 |
Rosberg pits for medium tyres. That was his second stop so he might be on a three-stopper. |
Lap 33 |
Vettel is cruising at the front and 17.7s ahead of Hamilton. Hamilton sets his personal best but Webber is still quicker and closes the gap to 10.2s. Alonso can't quite live with the pace of the Red Bull and is 1.7s behind Webber. Rosberg is trying to make the end of the race on those medium tyres. He has 39 laps to go and is told he is still racing Webber and Alonso ahead. |
Lap 34 |
Vettel is about to lap Raikkonen. There should be blue flags but the Lotus did not make it easy for himl. At the moment Kimi is in a battle with Bottas for 12th. |
Lap 35 |
Webber closes the gap to Hamilton to 9.2s. That battle is definitely going to happen. Webber will be keen to make it a Red Bull one-two and Hamilton will struggle to stop him at this rate. Alonso is just about holding on. He's 2.0s off Webber and will also fancy a crack at Hamilton before the end of the race. |
Lap 36 |
Vettel is 16.1s clear of Hamilton so just has to stroke it home from here. Vergne is having a good race in sixth as di Resta and Grosjean in seventh and eighth have yet to pit on the medium tyres. |
Lap 37 |
Webber has broken his front wing trying to pass van der Garde. The end plate has come off after contact at the hairpin. Webber went for the inside under blue flags but the Caterham just cut him off. |
Lap 38 |
Alonso smells blood and is now 0.7s off Webber and closing on the Red Bull. But Webber is still faster than Hamilton despite the damage. |
Lap 39 |
Webber sets the fastest time of the race regardless! Alonso is close behind him though and also sets a fastest lap. Both are reeling in Hamilton. |
Lap 40 |
Van der Garde has been given a 10-second stop/go penalty for the incident with Webber. Vettel still leads by 16.4s at the front. Hamilton has a 7.4s gap over the Webber/Alonso battle, which is about 0.3s faster than the Mercedes. |
Lap 41 |
Alonso is 0.4s off Webber as they cross the line. He has the DRS but isn't able to get close enough in the braking zones to make a move stick. Webber locks up into the hairpin ... this is Alonso's chance. |
Lap 42 |
And Alonso makes a move stick around the outside at turn one. that move started at the other end of the circuit with Webber's lock-up into the hairpin. Hamilton is 7.8s ahead of that battle, but now has Alonso running about 0.4s faster than him with free air behind him. |
Lap 43 |
Sutil has a wobbling rear wing in 10th place. But it's holding on at the moment. |
Lap 44 |
Grosjean pits for the first time and comes out in 11th place. Vettel told to be cautious as he laps van der Garde. Red Bull don't want two damaged cars out there. |
Lap 45 |
Vettel lost a bit of time on that last lap passing back markers but still has a 14.6s lead over Hamilton. Di Resta is looking strong in seventh. He has enough time to pit and hold position. He's still on the mediums he started on. Alonso is still 8.1s behind Hamilton so maybe that battle with Webber took some life out of his tyres. |
Lap 46 |
Another battle shaping up between the McLaren boys in 12th and 13th. It's been a bad weekend so far, I wonder if tempers will fray when they go wheel to wheel. |
Lap 47 |
Webber pits. The damaged front wing remains on, the tyres change. Van de Garde has his front wing stuck under his car but is carrying on. He should really pull over as that could be dangerous. |
Lap 48 |
Alonso pits. Van der Garde has now stopped. The damage was caused as he was lapped by Hulkenberg and the Sauber has also retired. |
Lap 49 |
Hamilton pits. Medium tyres go on and he gets away cleanly. Hamilton comes out in between the McLarens but is a lap ahead. That must be satisfying. |
Lap 50 |
Vettel pits and gets away cleanly. He will now run to the end and comes out in plenty of clean air. Alonso is now 6.9s off Hamilton. Webber is 3.5s off Alonso after those pit stops. |
Lap 51 |
Big lock-up for Rosberg into the chicane. That could be nasty as he'll have to carry that flatspot until the end of the race. Webber is the fastest man on the track again despite that front wing damage. |
Lap 52 |
Alonso has the gap down to 5.7s to Hamilton and will be pushing to try to close that gap before the end of the race. Vettel makes a mistake into turn one and runs wide. It looked like a lapse in concentration and he is told to calm down and get back into the rhythm. |
Lap 53 |
Hamilton is 14.6s off Vettel as he crossed the line, so it's not really made a difference to the Red Bull's dominant lead. Hamilton has a gap of just 3.9s to Alonso now. Webber is a further 4.1s down the road so Hamilton could see his podium come under threat. |
Lap 54 |
Massa passes Grosjean for tenth in to the chicane. Raikkonen is his next target. Di Resta us still going and has been told by his team to make the call on when he wants to pit. He's got a 24.1s lead over Sutil so should be able to hold position even with a pit stop. |
Lap 55 |
Grosjean pits to take on fresh mediums. His hopes of a one-stop are over. Alonso is now 2.7s off Hamilton as Vettel sets off on fastest first and second sectors. |
Lap 56 |
Vettel sets the fastest lap to extend his lead to 16.0s over Hamilton. Alonso is now 1.9s off Hamilton. Webber has dropped a bit and is 6.9s off the Ferrari. Alonso laps Massa and now has Hamilton in his sights. |
Lap 57 |
Alonso now has the gap down to 1.4s. With 14 laps remaining I can't see Hamilton holding on to second. Di Resta pits. |
Lap 58 |
Hamilton laps Raikkonen as Alonso closes to 1.2s. Hamilton is told some info over the radio and replies "Please just let me drive, man". Rosberg pits and has a big enough gap to Vergne to hold onto fifth. Vergne also pits. |
Lap 59 |
Alonso closes the gap to 1.0s as he sets the fastest lap. Hamilton is struggling to lap Sutil and now has Alonso on his gearbox. |
Lap 60 |
Just 0.4s separating Alonso and Hamilton now. Hamilton shouted "Blue flag!" over the radio when he was stuck behind Sutil. Webber is 9.7s off this battle so appears to be fighting demons of his own and settling for fourth. |
Lap 61 |
Sutil has been given a drive-through for ignoring blue flags. He did sit in front of Hamilton for about half a lap before letting him past. Alonso uses DRS on the back straight but isn't yet close enough to try a move on Hamilton. |
Lap 62 |
Alonso attempts to pass into the hairpin around the outside, but Hamilton blocks him off. |
Lap 63 |
Alonso has the run out of the final chicane and they touch as the Ferrari passes the Mercedes on the pit straight. No obvious damage to Hamilton's car but the Mercedes is now third. |
Lap 64 |
Vettel still leads by 19.6s over Alonso. Hamilton has an 8.3s lead over Webber. Sutil stops for his drive through. Raikkonen is now eighth but 8.7s behind di Resta in seventh. |
Lap 65 |
The battle for second is not over yet as Hamilton attacks Alonso again into the final chicane. He used DRS to get in range and it looked like they made contact again. Great racing by Hamilton. |
Lap 66 |
Hamilton is told he has no damage on his front wing but a replay shows that one of the cascades went flying off when they touched.
They are getting a crane out to remove the car, no sign of a safety car yet. |
Lap 67 |
Massa is now all over the back of Raikkonen. They are battling over eighth place and the Ferrari is clearly quicker with three laps remaining. |
Lap 68 |
Vettel is 17.4s ahead of Alonso who is now 1.6s ahead of Hamilton. A replay showed that Hamilton was able to get back at Alonso due to a small mistake by the Ferrari driver. Alonso is now faster. Webber is 8.6s behind Hamilton. The podium looks set now with two laps remaining. |
Lap 69 |
Rosberg is on his own in fifth ahead of Vergne and di Resta, The only real battle in the top ten is between Raikkonen and Massa. |
Lap 70 |
Vettel wins in Canada. Alonso is 14.4s off in second after a good race from sixth. Hamilton takes a very well-earned third place 1.5s off. Webber and Rosberg also complete 70 laps in Montreal, the rest are a lap down on Vettel. Vettel: "Yes! We won Canada!" That's the first time Red Bull has won here in Montreal and it was very convincing indeed. Raikkonen finishes his 24th consecutive race in the points, equalling Michael Schumacher's record. Vettel is now on his final lap. He's set a fastest first sector and may well try for a fastest lap on his last attempt. Massa passes Raikkonen for eighth into the chicane at the end of lap 69. |
Vettel celebrates atop his Red Bull after completing a burn out in front of his boss Christian Horner on his return to the pits. Honourable mentions for Vergne, di Resta and Massa for impressive drives to sixth, seventh and eighth. Arguably Massa should never have been starting from so far back, but still did a good job today. Thank you for joining us today for the Canadian Grand Prix. It was a dominant display by Vettel but I hope you enjoyed it. We'll have lots of reaction coming up on the website so stay tuned for all the stories behind the race. |

Gutierrez is in the barrier at turn one.
