Kovalainen sure he would win the title in the right car
Heikki Kovalainen is 100% sure he would win the title if he had a car capable of doing so.
Kovalainen is entering his sixth season in the sport this year and his third with the relatively young Caterham outfit. He started his career at Renault and was team-mate to Lewis Hamilton at McLaren when the Briton won the title in 2008, but only won one race himself at the 2008 Hungarian Grand Prix
Asked by ESPNF1 if he thought he could now win the title in a front-running car, he said: "100%. 100%"
Kovalainen added that he would stay with Caterham if it continues to make progress and reckons it has the potential to one day win a world championship.
"It's possible, yeah, it's possible," he said. "But at the moment I haven't set any long term goals for myself and actually I don't have a contract until after this year with anyone, I want to keep my options open. If I see that this team is progressing like I think it should I think I'm happy to stay here. There are many things that I've been able to achieve in this team that I didn't achieve in the previous teams and that are working very well.
"But of course, I'm a hungry driver, I'm really hungry for success again and I'm really keen to see how good I could be. I think I can do a great job now in a good car, but there's no point in talking about it too much. Although I feel I can get in to that kind of situation and deliver, it's a different thing to do that than to talk about it.
"So I don't focus at the moment on it very much, I just focus on performing where I am now, 110%, and let other people worry about the other things. Probably after the start of the season at some point we'll sit down - my management - with the people around me [the team] and we'll sort of have a look; 'Where are we? What do we think?' And then we go from there."
