Andy Murray made a stuttering start to his grass court campaign as he was dumped out of the AEGON Championships with defeat to Nicolas Mahut.

The British No. 1, a two-time champion at The Queen's Club, appeared to struggle with his movement on the surface as he succumbed to a 6-3 6-7(4) 7-6(1) defeat on Wednesday.

Mahut had the benefit of a first-round win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez under his belt, while Murray, who had a bye into the second round, never looked comfortable in his first competitive outing on the grass.

Murray was slow to settle into his rhythm and dropped his third service game, Mahut grabbing a 4-2 lead before seeing out the set. Despite being pegged back after forging an early lead in the second set, Murray held firm in the tiebreak to force a decider.

As the match headed for a decisive third set tiebreak, Mahut, perhaps best known for being on the losing side of a world-record match against John Isner at Wimbledon in 2010, raced towards victory with six match points. Murray saved the first, but was helpless to stave off defeat as the Frenchman clinched the win in two hours and 35 minutes.

Mahut will now face Grigor Dimitrov in the third round after the Bulgarian ousted No. 14 seed Gilles Muller 7-6(1) 6-4.
