Colin Montgomerie failed to secure a return to Congressional after missing out on qualification for the US Open.

Montgomerie shot a one-over-par 145 in the 36-hole event at Walton Heath to miss out on a return to the course where he finished runner-up to Ernie Els in 1997.

Montgomerie came into the event on a high following his first top-ten finish for nearly three years at the BMW PGA Championship, but he failed to maintain his momentum as he followed up an opening 72 with a one-over 73 in the rain in Surrey.

Victory went to Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts on nine under par, while Shane Lowry, Robert Rock, Richard Dinwiddie and David Howell also qualified.

Stephen Gallacher will fly the flag for Scotland at Congressional after making it with a stroke to spare, but it was disappointment for another Scot, Richie Ramsey, who missed out in heartbreaking circumstances.

Ramsey qualified for a play-off with Johan Edfors and Andreas Harto for the last of 11 qualifying spots. However, the Scot had already left for the airport to catch a plane to Belfast for the wedding reception of fellow player Gareth Maybin. Ramsey missed the flight, but failed to return to the course in time as Edfors clinched the final qualifying spot.
