Montgomerie finishes last in Open qualifier

Colin Montgomerie's hopes of qualifying for The Open for a 22nd consecutive year is hanging by a thread after he failed to secure a place via the final qualifying event.
Just a week after missing out on a place in the US Open, Montgomerie finished last in a 36-hole qualifying event at Sunningdale. The Scot followed up a first-round 71 with a 74 to leave him 18 shots adrift of winner Graeme Storm.
If Montgomerie is to qualify for the Open at Royal St George's next month, he needs a top-five finish at either the French or Scottish Opens, while there are also two spots available via a mini-money list on the European Tour, which continues in Italy this week.
"It's disappointing, so I'll go to Italy and try again. I will be trying everything - as always," Montgomerie said.
Wales Open champion Alexander Noren produced a late charge to secure his place in the field at Sandwich, while Peter Whiteford, 2002 Open runner-up Thomas Levet and Alejandro Canizares all booked their spots.
South Africa's George Coetzee sealed the final place after triumphing in a five-way play-off, sinking a 20-foot birdie putt at the sixth extra hole in virtual darkness to beat Spain's Pablo Larrazabal.
