Timo Glock says HRT has taken a "giant step" in performance this season and that he is worried it means Virgin has now dropped to the back of the grid.

Virgin was targeting progress this season after being well off the pace in its debut year in 2010, but the new MVR-02 has been slow again. HRT, however, endured an even worse start to the season, failing to qualify in Australia, but has since progressed well and Tonio Liuzzi qualified ahead of both Virgin cars last time out in Canada. Glock said he feared a repeat performance in Valencia.

"Hispania have taken a giant step," Glock told Auto Motor und Sport. "I'm afraid that they will be in front of us here."

Glock admitted he also had another problem to deal with this weekend having sliced his finger earlier this week. He said the injury would mean he would have to adapt his driving style until it has fully healed.

"I did it on Tuesday. It's a pretty deep cut - I thought I had cut it (the finger) off," Glock joked. "I have to use the steering wheel slightly differently because I can't really bend it, and I will use the gear shift paddle with the three lower fingers."
