Grosjean thought win was possible

Romain Grosjean believes he would have won the European Grand Prix had he not retired 17 laps from the end.

Grosjean was running second to race winner Fernando Alonso when his car slowed and stopped with an alternator issue. It was Grosjean's first retirement issue due to a reliability issue this season and he said he felt he could have caught and passed Alonso before the end of the race.

"I knew we were about 0.6s quicker than the Ferrari," he said. "Tyre degradation is normally better on our car so I knew I had to wait a little bit and then try to catch him when he started to struggle. The plan was on and I think we could have had the Marseilles [French national anthem] today.

Grosjean said there were some positives to take from the weekend and he is sure his time will come soon.

"We had an alternator problem and we need to look into it," he added. "The race was almost perfect until that point. We had a good start, a good strategy, we pushed when we had to and we had a good performance today. [We were] two fingers from the first win, but I'm not going to be the man of the moment today, but I will try to be in the future. But I'm sure we are showing some strong performance and that's good for the way we want to improve ourselves. "
