Sebastian Vettel said Nico Rosberg and Mercedes were unbeatable in the battle for pole position at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver was 0.2s off Rosberg in qualifying as Mercedes sprung a surprise in Q2 and Q3 to come to the front of the field. Vettel said even if he had executed the perfect lap he would still have been short of Rosberg's pace.

"I'm definitely not disappointed," he said. "I have to say congratulations to Nico because he put a very strong lap in and I think it was all his today. Initially when I crossed the line I saw that I didn't go first and that I had second place on one of the screens, but I didn't know how much was missing [to Rosberg]. The lap was fine but when I saw the gap to Nico it was clear that, even with the perfect lap, he was unbeatable today."

Vettel said tyre strategy will be crucial in the race and he is confident Red Bull's strategy of saving tyres in qualifying will pay off in the race.

"I'm very happy and we managed to save some tyres throughout qualifying. It will be all about tyres and tyre degradation tomorrow so we will see what happens, but obviously it's good to start from the front."
