Sebastian Vettel said he should have been on pole position if he hadn't made any mistakes during qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Team-mate Mark Webber beat Vettel to pole with an impressive final lap, with the majority of the gains coming in the first sector. Replays then showed that Vettel had run slightly wide at Turn 1 on his last run and he said after qualifying that he only had himself to blame.

"I think it's a great result for the team first of all, Mercedes were very strong, both Nico [Rosberg] and Lewis [Hamilton] in Q2. I think Mark and myself weren't hanging about in Q2 but they were very, very strong. We seemed to be able to find a little bit of extra time in Q3 and Mark did a very good lap so congratulations to him.

"I should have done a little bit better and I had a chance to be on pole today with no mistakes. It was a great result for the team and we should have a strong race tomorrow."

When it was put to Vettel that it wasn't a normal performance from him as he failed to head any session during qualifying, Vettel replied: "I think we were still pretty competitive, that's probably the difference between you guys and us in the garage, we know there are no guarantees [of pole position]."
