Mercedes has put an end to speculation linking it with a move for Fernando Alonso by handing a two-year contract extension to Nico Rosberg, according to a BBC report.

Rosberg's contract was due at the end of the current season and a team spokesperson would only comment as far as saying Mercedes has "long-term relationships" with both its drivers. The deal comes in the same week as the comments of Dieter Zetsche, the chairman of Mercedes-Benz Cars, that Alonso is "maybe the best driver in F1".

Those comments gave weight to the rumours which started in Spain that Mercedes may be working on a deal to sign Alonso in the future. Mercedes is keen to stress that Zetsche also said the team has the best driver line-up in F1, but that it was not reported in the media.

Team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who currently leads Rosberg by three points in the drivers' standings, is currently in the second season of a three-year deal.
