Felipe Massa topped the first day of Silverstone's in-season test, setting a time 0.331s quicker than Mercedes' Nico Rosberg in second.

Massa completed a total of 23 laps by 13:00, with his best attempt coming on the medium compound tyre late in the morning. Rosberg managed a total of 41 laps but was over a second off the best time set in the dry during Friday practice for the British Grand Prix.

Sergio Perez was third fastest and 1.347s off the pace of Massa's Williams, after improving just before 13:00. Jules Bianchi managed the fourth fastest time and a total of 72 laps while tyre testing in the Marussia. On Wednesday Bianchi will swap to the Ferrari, becoming the first driver to sample two different 2014 cars this year.

Jean-Eric Vergne was fifth fastest but stopped on track in the morning, causing the only red flag of the session. Pastor Maldonado had an industrious morning with 54 laps in the Lotus before lunch, while Pedro de la Rosa managed 48 in the Ferrari as part of a tyre test for Pirelli.

McLaren young driver and GP2 star Stoffel Vandoorne was at the wheel of the McLaren and completed 33 laps with a best time of 1:38.554. Adrian Sutil was ninth fastest in the Sauber ahead of Formula Renault 3.5 driver Will Stevens in the Caterham.

Daniel Ricciardo was at the bottom of the timing sheets after opting not to complete a flying lap, but still managed 23 laps with trips in and out the pit lane.
