Bernie Ecclestone is keen to see fewer teams on the grid as long as they run three cars.

A field of eight three-car teams rather than 11 two-car teams has been on Ecclestone's agenda before, but with questions over the future of some of F1's existing outfits it could become a reality next year. Ecclestone said he would welcome fewer teams and believes it would increase the quality of the field.

"It has always been on the cards if we lose up to three teams the others will run three cars," he said. "I think we should do it anyway. I would rather see Ferrari with three cars, or any of the other top teams with three cars, than having teams that are struggling."

Asked when F1 would know for sure how many teams will compete in 2015, Ecclestone added: "We'll know after the next two or three races."

Despite calls from several teams to find ways to cut costs, Ecclestone accused the smaller outfits at the back of the grid of being short-sighted.

"I've been around - most people would say too long - but long enough to know there are always people at the back of the grid. The trouble with the teams - which is all normal - they think of themselves short term. You ask about next year, but they're worried about the next race, which is the problem."
