Mercedes reserve driver Pascal Wehrlein has set his sights firmly on Formula One after a solid first day of testing a current car in Abu Dhabi.

At the wheel of this year's championship-winning Mercedes, Wehrlein set the fastest time of Wednesday's test and completed 96 laps. He currently drives for the German manufacturer in DTM, but said there is no doubt where his aspirations lie.

"Once you have driven that car you never want to stop the day," he said. "I hope that in the future I can drive in Formula One and participate.

"It was great, I really enjoyed it and for me it was my first time in this car and second time in a Formula One car. I really enjoyed it, had a lot of fun and we did our test programme. Everything was fine."

Werhlein was reluctant to read too much into his time.

"For me it's good to see myself on the first position, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter because everyone has a different test programme and you never know what the other drivers and teams are running. It doesn't really matter. The important thing is I could improve a lot today and we did our test programme."
