The details of the FIA's new Formula One superlicence points system have been released by the governing body.

From 2016, drivers must have scored 40 points in a three year period under the new system to qualify for the opportunity to apply for a superlicence to race in F1. Points are awarded for finishing in top ten positions in certain championships outside F1 (see table below), including a "future FIA F2 championship", which is not yet up and running.

The F2 championship will award the most points, with a top three finish enough to gain the necessary 40 points for a superlicence. A top two finish in GP2 will also award enough points as well as victories in the F3 European Championship, WEC and IndyCar. However, winning the Formula Renault 3.5 title - a route taken by several drivers on the current grid - will not be enough to secure a superlicence alone, although in reality most drivers will have accrued additional points in a previous campaign in the past three years.

Applicants will also have to be over the age of 18, hold a valid roadcar driving licence and complete over 300km of testing in a recent F1 car. New applicants will also have to pass a test on the F1 sporting regulations.
