Cosworth has confirmed that its Formula One engine clients will be able to run Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) on their cars next season.
The teams have decided to drop their self-imposed ban on KERS next season and increased the minimum weight of the car to 640KG to accommodate the bulky systems. Teams currently powered by Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault have indicated they will fit KERS to their cars and Williams - powered by Cosworth - is also keen.
Cosworth's other three customer teams HRT, Lotus and Virgin, are less likely to run KERS due to the cost of developing and fitting a system. Nevertheless, the firm's business director Mark Gallagher said it would make sure the engines are KERS ready by the start of next season.
"We have to make several new configurations to our V8 and also change some of the accessories," he said, before confirming: "Our partners will be able to use KERS if they so choose."
