Robert Kubica crashed out of his rallying debut on Saturday after leading his class in the Sicilian Taormina-Messina rally. The newly-signed Renault driver was at the wheel of a DP Motorsports Renault Clio R3, but hit a wall and was eliminated from the event.

Kubica was eighth overall when he had the accident, which damaged the right front corner of his Clio beyond repair. Before the accident Kubica talked to wrc.com: "Yesterday I did not attack, I was trying to learn about driving the car - today is a longer challenge. The only unknowns are the pace notes, I hope to get used to driving in this way. I must learn to listen."

Despite the accident, Kubica is expected to compete in the French Championship Rallye de Var in the same Renault Clio R3. WRC world champion Sebastien Loeb will also be racing at the event, although the pair won't be competing in the same class.
