Grosjean storms to sprint victory

Romain Grosjean put in an impressive performance to win the sprint race at Silverstone.

Grosjean fought his way through from fifth on the grid to eventually seal a win that strengthens his position as the championship leader. Grosjean was able to take advantage of second-placed man Stefano Coletti stalling on the grid, blocking Sam Bird from making a clean getaway directly behind and allowing Grosjean the run on the iSport through the first two corners before passing up the inside in to turn four.

At the front, Dani Clos led away from Giedo van der Garde in the early laps, as the top four were able to run within three seconds without applying any direct pressure. As the race went on it was apparent that Clos didn't have the pace to stretch out a comfortable lead but neither did van der Garde have the ability to close the gap, and so on lap 15 Grosjean made his move.

Following closely through Abbey, Grosjean dived down the inside in to turn three. By now Clos had a slight lead, but he made his only real mistake of the afternoon two corners later, locking up in to Brooklands and putting Grosjean right on his tail. The following lap Grosjean took the Formula One line through Luffield to get a better run through Woodcote and allowing him to dive up the inside in to Copse and in to the lead.

Behind them, Bird was struggling on the soft Pirelli tyres, locking up regularly in to Vale. His iSport team-mate Marcus Ericsson had cleared Christian Vietoris and closed up quickly, taking the first opportunity to dive past in to Vale for fourth place.

Yesterday's race winner Jules Bianchi pulled a great move on Vietoris around the outside in to Copse, and also closed Bird down to snatch fifth place late on, with Bird picking up the final point in sixth.
