Proposed French circuit lost €8 million
Almost €8 million (US$11.3 million) was spent on the abandoned bid to host future French Grand Prix at the Flins-Les-Mureaux circuit.
Following the demise of the Magny Cours event, and also the alternative Disneyland Paris project, the Yvelines region last month scrapped a project to build a new circuit as part of a new industrial complex to attract investors. France's Auto Hebdo now reveals that Yvelines' Conseil General spent €7.9 million (US$11.1 million) on the failed plan.
The circuit was meant to be ready to hold a French Grand Prix in 2011 but was dealt a critical blow when the local council refused planning permission. It is rumoured that the historic event could be resurrected at Magny-Cours or Paul Ricard but it would be competing for space on the F1 calendar with new venues in India and Rome. There is also a bid coming from a new project called Le Pole Val de France in the Sarcelles region but solid information about it remains scarce. On his election FIA president Jean Todt said he wanted to re-instate his home grand prix but has not mentioned the subject publically since.
