Lewis Hamilton said he was surprised to secure a front row grid position in qualifying at the Canadian Grand Prix after struggling to get his tyres working in the hotter conditions on Saturday.

Hamilton looked like the man to beat during Friday practice, but track temperatures of 40C on Saturday appeared to hand the advantage to Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton qualified 0.3s shy of Vettel but said he was still happy with the result.

"It was definitely a bit harder for us today, we definitely struggled," he said. "We were working with the tyres in FP3 and when we got into qualifying we had to push extremely hard to get the tyres to switch on. But fortunately we had a new set still in Q3 and just managed to get through so we're very happy with the performance.

"I'm very surprised to see us on the front row, but nonetheless we'll definitely take it and work as hard as we can tomorrow."
