Former Formula One driver Alex Zanardi has won his first Paralympic gold medal at London 2012 with a dominant victory in the handcycling time trial.

Zanardi completed the 16km course at Brands Hatch in 24m50.22s to take gold for Italy from German Norbert Mosandl. Zanardi had a lead of 14 seconds at the first time split after 8km and extended that to eventually win by over 27 seconds.

Zanardi took part in 41 grands prix during his career before a crash at the Lausitzring when racing in IndyCar saw him lose both his legs. He has since turned his attentions to handcycling and won the New York Marathon's handcycling class in 2011.

Now Zanardi has a Paralympic gold medal to add to that achievement, and will be racing again at Brands Hatch in the handcycling road race on September 7 and then the team relay on September 8.
