Indian driver Chandhok linked to Stefan drive

Indian GP2 driver Karun Chandhok has reportedly signed for F1 hopefuls Stefan GP.

The Serbian team is still looking to race this season, in the event that either Campos or US F1 don't make the grid. Ex-Williams driver Kazuki Nakajima is expected to test its new car in the Algarve next week and will likely line-up as a race driver if the team is given an entry.

According to reports Chandhok has brought US$6 million to the squad in return for the drive, with an exit clause in case the team doesn't make F1 this year. Team boss Zoran Stefanovic said nothing had been finalised but that the team would make an announcement soon.

"We are in various negotiations, but it has not been sorted out completely now," he told Italy's 422race.com. "We are very close to [deciding] and very shortly we will be announcing the drivers officially. At the moment not yet, but we are very near. But we still cannot confirm any names yet."

He has spent the last three seasons in F1's feeder series GP2, during which he scored two race wins and was the team-mate of Bruno Senna in 2008. His father is Vicky Chandhok, a high ranking Indian motor racing official, with links to F1's governing body the FIA as well as F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone.

Stefan GP's new car is largely based on ex-F1 team Toyota's 2010 designs and its staff are currently based at the Japanese manufacturer's old base in Cologne. The car will be named the Stefan S-01 and has been painted red, the Serbian national colour, for its first test.
