Fernando Alonso believes it is down to the fans to judge whether Sebastian Vettel should be considered among the all-time greats in Formula One.

The Red Bull driver is expected to notch up his fourth consecutive championship this weekend in India, with Alonso the only driver capable of prolonging his wait for another title. Asked if it will make Vettel one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport, Alonso reversed the question to say the media and the fans, who on occasion have given Vettel a negative reception, must decide.

"It's also down to the fans, they have been watching TV for many years and they can support more one driver or another driver, which often depends on which country they come from," he said. "For some people he will be the greatest in history and for some people we need to wait a few more years to see what he can do in future, because there is still more time. For some people the greatest of all time will be Ayrton [Senna] because he is probably the most popular around the world. There is Michael [Schumacher] and many names and it depends which country you ask the question in."

But Alonso is not worried about Vettel's recent dominance in the sport, and is confident he will have another chance to be champion before he retires.

"I would like to win and I'm still 32 so it's the last year of my career. I'm sure I will have more opportunities and I would like to win more championships. Over the last four years I fought for three world championships and maybe I finish three times second. That's sad in a way, to come so close and not win it, but I am extremely proud to be in the best form and with the best races of my life."
