Aaron Ramsey has been ruled out of Arsenal's Champions League opener against Borussia Dortmund with an ankle injury.

The Wales international limped out of training on Monday.

"Aaron Ramsey has been very influential in our team since the start of the season, but it is a good opportunity to show that we now have a big squad and that we can cope with it," Gunners boss Arsene Wenger told Sky Sports News.

"We have of course three midfielders out [Abou] Diaby, [Jack] Wilshere and Ramsey."

With Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas having moved on, Ramsey is now a key cog in the Arsenal engine room. He has been handed the captaincy of Wales, such is the regard he is held in, and his absence will be sorely felt by the Gunners who are also without Jack Wilshere on account of injury.

Arsenal gained their first win of the Premier League season against Swansea at the weekend and will be looking to carry that momentum into their Champions League curtain raiser.

New midfield signings Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun made their Gunners debuts at the weekend, and both are in the 18-man squad for Tuesday's match, but Tomas Rosicky does not travel on account of a knee injury.
