Ajax manager Frank de Boer insists that Jan Vertonghen's transfer to Tottenham Hotspur is "very close" - and he anticipates that the deal will be completed.

The Belgium international defender said earlier this week that "it looks like I'll be at Ajax on July 2" - a significant turnaround, as he has been heavily linked to Spurs all summer.

A row over his slice of the transfer fee - rumoured to be as much as 15% - was believed to be holding up the deal, but De Boer has moved to cool this talk.

"We're very close. But if the deal isn't done, Jan must start his training next week with us," De Boer said. "Eventually, I expect the deal will be done. I expect everything will be alright."

Tottenham apparently cleared the decks for Vertonghen when they sold defender Vedran Corluka to Lokomotiv Moscow on Wednesday.

Spurs are reportedly also close to confirming the arrival of Hoffenheim midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, who impressed last year on loan at Swansea.
