Liverpool will face FC Gomel in the third round of Europa League qualifying after the Belarusians clinched victory over Renova on Thursday.

Gomel took a 2-0 lead into the second leg, which was played on their home ground, and they managed to cling on for a 2-1 aggregate triumph, despite losing the second leg 1-0.

A 56th-minute strike from Ersen Asani made for a tense second half for Gomel, but they displayed plenty of defensive resistance to protect their slender advantage.

The first leg against Liverpool, which will be the first competitive game in charge for new manager Brendan Rodgers, will take place on August 2, with the return match played at Anfield on August 9.

Rodgers' men are currently in the US, preparing for their first campaign under the new manager. Having drawn their opening friendly with Toronto 1-1, they tasted defeat in their recent outing on Wednesday, losing 2-1 to Roma.

St Johnstone's hopes of setting up a tie with Marseille are over after they failed to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit at home to Eskisehirspor. The SPL club were held 1-1 at McDiarmid Park, losing 3-1 on aggregate.

Elsewhere, St Patrick's Athletic are through to the next round of qualifying after they beat NK Siroki 3-2 on aggregate after extra-time. St Pat's will now face Hannover in a two-legged tie.

The European hopes of Sligo Rovers are over though, after they suffered a 4-2 aggregate loss to Spartak Trnava. Portadown also exit the competition, paying the price for their 6-0 first-leg defeat as they went down 10-2 over the two legs to Slaven Belupo Koprivnica.
