Gareth Bale recovered from his ankle injury to spark a comeback for Tottenham as they defeated the New York Red Bulls 2-1 in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday evening.

Bale left Spurs' last friendly against Liverpool on crutches following a challenge from Charlie Adam, but started the match against the MLS outfit and headed home the equaliser on 58 minutes. The goal restored parity after Kenny Cooper put Red Bulls ahead from the penalty spot.

New signing Gylfi Sigurdsson then curled in a superb match-winning strike seven minutes after Bale's goal to give Andre Villas-Boas' men victory at Red Bull Arena.

New York's latest signing, former Everton forward Tim Cahill, was felled in the box by new Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen inside the opening 10 minutes, and Cooper made no mistake with the ensuing spot-kick.

New York goalkeeper Bill Gaudette made fine saves to deny Bale and Tom Huddlestone before the break before Aaron Lennon went closer still in the 53rd minute.

Gaudette was helpless to prevent Bale drawing the teams level five minutes later, though, as the Wales winger climbed high above his marker to glance Sigurdsson's corner into the back of the net.

Sigurdsson then sealed the win with a fine effort. The new signing worked his way into the box before cutting inside Markus Holgersson and curling an unstoppable shot into the far top corner.

Spurs also hit the crossbar through Michael Dawson following another Sigurdsson corner soon after as Villas-Boas' men signed off their pre-season tour of the United States with a win.

Swansea lost a two-goal lead in the closing stages to draw 2-2 with San Jose Earthquakes in the final match of their pre-season tour of the US.

Goals from Danny Graham and Chico looked set to give the victory to Michael Laudrup's side, who lost to the Colorado Rapids before beating Ventura County Fusion in their two previous two tour matches.

However, San Jose substitute Steven Lenhart netted twice in the final 10 minutes to salvage a draw for the home side.
