Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will miss four weeks of action with a thigh injury picked up in the 3-2 victory over Fulham on Saturday.

Rooney, who had come on as a second-half substitute, was caught by the studs of Hugo Rodallega, which opened up a deep wound on his right leg.

Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed in his press conference after the game that the England international has been taken to hospital for treatment and is set to be out for around a month.

If the early prognosis of four weeks out is correct, Rooney could be back for United's trip to Liverpool on September 23; he will be absent for the matches against Southampton and Wigan.

Rooney is also to miss England's World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine.
