Hamburg are waiting to find out from Tottenham whether they will be able to sign attacking midfielder Rafael van der Vaart.

Van der Vaart's future is currently up in the air, with the Bundesliga club - who the Dutchman played for between 2005 and 2008 - announcing that they are keen to bring the 29-year-old back to Germany.

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas is currently reshaping his squad at White Hart Lane - with Moussa Dembele being drafted in, and Luka Modric sold to Real Madrid - and it remains to be seen where Van der Vaart fits in.

Hamburg are hopeful he will be allowed to leave, especially if the Premier League club wrap up a deal for Shakhtar Donetsk forward Willian or Marseille's Loic Remy, but will wait for official word from the north London club.

With the transfer window set to close on Friday, however, time is of the essence.

"There is not a lot of time - it is up to Tottenham," Hamburg chairman Carl-Edgar Jarchow said. "If we have a chance to sign him we will do everything to make it happen."
