Ancelotti is favourite to join Real Madrid

Paris Saint-Germain have approached Rafael Benitez to succeed wantaway boss Carlo Ancelotti, according to reports in France.

L'Equipe claims Benitez's advisers have been in talks with PSG chiefs over the imminent vacancy with the new French champions, who have all but given up hopes of hanging on to boss Ancelotti as he closes in on a potential switch to Real Madrid.

Benitez is currently in America with the Chelsea squad preparing to take charge of his final two games as the club's interim manager on an end-of-season tour, yet the impressive flourish he inspired in his final month as Blues boss has given the Spaniard's hopes of landing a top job a huge boost.

A third-place finish in the Premier League and Europa League glory was viewed as a triumphant finale to a turbulent spell for Benitez at Chelsea and now it seems as if the job offers are set to roll in for the former Liverpool boss.

Italian coaching great and current Republic of Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni is among those who have called for Napoli to appoint Benitez to replace the departed Walter Mazzarri, yet officials of the Serie A club have denied they are preparing an approach for the coach whose reputation in Italy was tarnished by a disappointing spell in charge of Inter Milan in 2010.

Benitez is also an early front runner to succeed Tony Pulis at Stoke, but he would doubtless relish the chance to take over at PSG, with the huge backing provided by the club's Qatari owners an obvious attraction for the candidates that may line up to succeed Ancelotti.
