Neville contender for role at United

Phil Neville is in the frame for a return to Manchester United as part of new manager David Moyes' coaching staff, the Guardian reports.

Moyes, who has left Everton after 11 years in charge to take over at Old Trafford, is understood to be interested in signing up Neville as first-team coach should Rene Meulensteen leave the club, as has been reported.

Neville, who was Moyes' captain at Goodison Park, recently brought his eight-year playing stint on Merseyside to an end. The 36-year-old made almost 400 appearances for United before moving to Everton in 2005.

Neville has expressed an interest in replacing Moyes as Everton manager, and went as far as discussing the role with chairman Bill Kenwright, although Wigan's Roberto Martinez remains the favourite to take charge at Goodison Park.

In addition to bringing in Neville, Moyes is also set to appoint Steve Round, Chris Woods and Robbie Cooke to his backroom staff.

Former Derby defender Round has been the assistant manager at Everton since 2008, and would take up the same role at United, replacing the departing Mike Phelan. Goalkeeping coach Woods is expected to take over from Eric Steele, while chief scout Cooke would come in for Martin Ferguson, the brother of retiring United manager Sir Alex.
