Nemanja Vidic will serve a three-match suspension after Manchester United failed in an attempt to get his red card at Chelsea overturned.

Vidic will miss the second leg of the League Cup semi-final against Sunderland and Premier League matches against Cardiff and Stoke after his appeal was rejected by an independent regulatory commission convened by the FA.

The defender was sent off in injury time of United's 3-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge for a challenge on Chelsea winger Eden Hazard.

After the match, United manager David Moyes disputed referee Phil Dowd's decision to dismiss the Serbian, saying: "I thought Vidic wasn't a sending-off."

With Vidic absent, Moyes only has four central defenders to choose from over the next three games - Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, who played in midfield against Chelsea.

Moyes is also waiting to see if Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra will be fit to face Sunderland.
