Lambert: It's been a crazy year

Rickie Lambert admits it has been a "crazy year" for him after passing his Liverpool medical ahead of a £4 million switch from Southampton.

The move is set to be completed on Monday after Lambert, who scored the winner against Scotland on his England debut in August, has flown out with Roy Hodgson's squad to Miami as they continue their World Cup preparations.

Lambert, born in Liverpool, will reportedly sign a two-year deal at Anfield, completing a fairytale return to a club who released him from their academy at the age of 15 after five years on the books.

"The medical went well," Lambert told Sky Sports News at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. "I'll speak properly about it, hopefully, very shortly.

"It's been a crazy football year to be honest, the way it's carrying on."

Asked whether he had spoken to Steven Gerrard about the move while on England duty, he said: "I've spoken to Stevie a while ago, but I'll speak properly on Monday."

The striker is expected to provide back-up for first-choice strikers Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge as Liverpool prepare for Champions League football next season on top of their domestic requirements.

He suggested it would be hard to leave Southampton after enjoying so much success with the club, whom he helped to successive promotions from League One to the Premier League in 2012.

"There's lots of emotions as you can imagine so it's something I need to address and obviously I will address all parties when I get the chance," he added.

Lambert was an unused substitute for England in their 3-0 World Cup warm-up victory over Peru at Wembley.

He scored 28 goals in his first two campaigns as a Premier League player.
