O'Neill resigns as Villa manager

Martin O'Neill has resigned as manager of Aston Villa after four years in charge.
He will be replaced temporarily by reserve team manager Kevin MacDonald, who will act as caretaker manager for Villa's opening Premier League fixture against West Ham at Villa Park on Saturday.
There had been speculation over his future at Villa Park with the impending sale of James Milner and interest in Ashley Young from Premier League rivals. O'Neill was close to leaving Villa at the end of last season but opted to stay after talks with owner Randy Lerner.
In a statement released by the club, confirmed that O'Neill had resigned with immediate effect.
O'Neill took over from David O'Leary in 2006, after the club had finished 16th in the Premier League, and guided them to a sixth place and qualification for the UEFA Cup after less than two years in charge.
Chief executive Paul Faulkner hailed O'Neill's contribution at the club.
"The club would like to thank Martin for the great work he has done at Aston Villa over the past four years," he said. "He has helped to establish the club in the upper echelons of the Premier League, has taken us to Wembley and we have also qualified for European competition for the past three seasons under his management. We wish him the best in the future."
Martin O'Neill said: "I have enjoyed my time at Aston Villa immensely. It's obviously a wrench to be leaving such a magnificent club. I would like to pay tribute to the Villa players, my coaching staff and the Villa supporters for all the support and encouragement they have given both the club and me personally during my time as manager. I wish them all the best for the future. I will obviously be assisting the club in the immediate short-term with regard to the handover of my duties."
