Spurs swoop for Gudjohnsen ahead of Hammers

Tottenham appear to have made a sensational last-minute swoop to sign Eidur Gudjohnsen on loan from under West Ham's noses after Spurs boss Harry Redknapp claimed the striker has chosen to join his side even after completing a medical with their Premier League rivals.

Struggling West Ham were keen to bolster their striking ranks by bringing in former Chelsea man Gudjohnsen on loan from Monaco, but the player himself has opted instead for high-flying Tottenham when presented with an identical deal, Redknapp said.

"We've been talking about him for nearly two weeks and when we heard West Ham were interested we made our move," Redknapp was quoted by the Sun as saying. "We are not paying a penny more than West Ham were offering him. Two identical deals were on the table. In the end it was a straight choice for Eidur.''

Gudjohnsen is now set to undergo a second medical in London this week, this time with Tottenham, who he will join until the end of the season.

New West Ham co-owner David Sullivan reacted angrily on Wednesday to Spurs making a move to sign Gudjohnsen.

Sullivan said: "We thought we had a deal and the player had even had a medical. We then heard that Tottenham were trying to speak to the player. I can't say I am happy about it but I believe in Karma and what goes around, comes around.''
