Liverpool have confirmed they have rejected a transfer request from striker Fernando Torres, who has been the subject of a bid from Premier League champions Chelsea.

The Blues made an offer believed to be in the region of £30 million for the 26-year-old on Thursday, which was rejected out of hand by the Merseyside club. But the Spaniard subsequently handed in a formal transfer request as he looks to leave the club he joined in 2007 - which was also dismissed by the Anfield hierarchy as they made it clear they want to keep their star striker.

"Fernando Torres tonight [Friday] submitted a written transfer request, which has been rejected by Liverpool," a club statement read. "Fernando is under long term contract and the club expect him to honour the commitment he made to Liverpool FC and its supporters when he signed the agreement."

Chelsea are now expected to return with an improved offer for the forward - in the region of £40m - although it is likely to be met with a similarly cold response by their rivals.

Torres has played in 23 Premier League games this season, scoring nine goals and providing a further two assists.
