Van der Vaart fears Modric will leave Spurs

Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has admitted Spurs face a real battle to keep hold of Luka Modric this summer.

Despite Spurs chairman Daniel Levy's insistence that the Croatia international is not for sale, suitors Chelsea appear undeterred.

With Modric eyeing a move away from White Hart Lane, Van der Vaart admits it will be hard to hang onto the midfielder, although he insists Modric is not motivated by money.

"It's difficult. When a player wants to leave and go to another club, it is difficult to keep them," Van der Vaart told Sky Sports News. "When a player is unhappy it's also not a good thing.

"Luka, [Gareth] Bale, they are not players that play for money - they play to win something. If they feel they have to go to another club it's their decision. But I hope they stay because they are fantastic and really important for the club."
