Fullback Hugo Southwell scored a hat-trick as London Wasps claimed a 38-7 bonus point victory over Rovigo in their Amlin Challenge Cup clash at Adams Park on Sunday.

The Scotland international struck twice in first half with fly-half Nicky Robinson converting both tries as well as adding an early penalty. Southwell crossed again in the opening moments of the second half, with Robinson adding the extras once again. Rovigo's only points came through a try by Riccardo Pavan, which was converted by Davide Duca. And prop Zak Taulafo grabbed Wasps' bonus point with a try in the 59th minute before Richard Haughton rounded off the win that confirmed Wasps' place at the top of Pool 3.

Exeter Chiefs returned to winning ways in with a 68-0 hammering of Cavalieri Prato in their Pool 4 clash at Sandy Park on Saturday.

Beaten by Perpignan last week, the Aviva Premiership side ran in ten tries against the Italian outfit with openside Ben White getting the scoreboard ticking over in just the second minute. Josh Tatupu soon crossed the line for the Chiefs' second try with a penalty try coming five minutes before half-time. And Exeter - playing against a Cavalieri side who had to play almost half of the first 40 with 14 men thanks to sin-binnings to Emanuele Leonardi and Uili Kolo'ofai - had their four-try bonus point sewn up before the break with No.8 James Phillips crashing over. It was more one-way traffic in the second 40 as Tatupu grabbed his second score early on with Mark Foster and Chris Bentley following the winger over the try-line before the hour mark. And a late penalty try along with Phillips' second and one for fullback Jack Nowell was enough to give the Chiefs a convincing win.

Elsewhere, Newcastle breathed life into their faltering season with a six-try 34-3 win against Petrarca in their latest Pool 2 clash. The Falcons took the lead in the 20th minute with Jamie Helleur crashing over and Kiwi fly-half Jeremy Manning also got in on the act to give Alan Tait's men a 14-0 lead at half-time. Lock Tim Swinson kept the scoreboard ticking over with a try four minutes into the second-half with winger Ryan Shortland getting the four-try bonus point in the 52nd minute. Hooker Joe Graham scored the Falcons' fifth try of the game with Swinson crossing for his second of the match and the Falcons' sixth late on.

In Saturday's other Pool 2 clash, Toulon made it two wins from two with a 26-12 victory at Pool 2 rivals Lyon. A first half try from centre Gaby Lovobalavu helped the visitors into a 16-9 lead at the break and another after the break from winger Christian Loamanu helped account for their Top 14 rivals who slumped to back-to-back defeat. Fly-half Julien Dumora added kicked three penalties and a conversion with replacement Jonny Wilkinson also amongst the points.

Sale Sharks bounced back from the disappointment of defeat in their opening game with a resounding 59-6 victory over Spanish champions CR La Vila in their Pool 5 clash at Edgeley Park on Friday night. The Aviva Premiership side recorded nine tries with Samoan centre Jonny Leota scoring a hat-trick to put their European campaign back on track after the loss in Brive last weekend. The home team secured a vital bonus point when Leota scored the first of his treble after half-time, with Sale's other tries coming from Andrew Higgins, Luther Burrell, Cillian Willis, Richie Vernon and a penalty try n front of a home crowd of 4,190.

The part-timers from Spain were constantly under pressure during a one-sided contest and they were repeatedly penalised, although they did manage two first-half penalties from Nick McCashin to go into the break 19-6 behind. Italian referee Alan Falzone tired of the Spanish side's infringements though and the visitors played for 20 minutes with 14 men when yellow cards were shown to McCashin and his half-back partner Hernan Quirelli in the first and second half respectively. Brive remain in control of Pool 5 following their 29-8 victory over Agen on Sunday.

Stade Francais cemented their place at the top of Pool 1 with a thumping 49-3 victory over Bucuresti in Paris on Friday night. The hosts outscored their Romanian rivals by seven tries to none with Australian centre Morgan Turinui crossing the whitewash either side of half-time. Flanker Antoine Burban, winger Francis Fainifo, scrum-half Byron Kelleher and hooker Laurent Sempere also crossed in the first half to put the Top 14 side firmly in control with replacement Hugo Bonneval completing the rout just past the hour mark. Fly-half Jerome Fillol weighed in with five conversions with centre Jules Plisson adding the extras following the final try of the night.

James Hook suffered disappointment on his return to Wales as his Perpignan side slumped to a 23-13 defeat to the Newport Gwent Dragons in their Pool 4 clash at Rodney Parade on Thursday night. Both sides had triumphed in their opening fixtures in Pool 4, with Perpignan edging out Exeter and the Dragons sweeping past Cavalieri Prato. However, there only ever looked like one winner in Newport, with the hosts taking the lead just 12 minutes in with a try from Lewis Evans, the flanker's second touchdown in as many games.

Jason Tovey converted and then added a penalty before the Dragons surged further clear when lock Adam Jones forced his way over the whitewash. Tovey added the extras once more to put the region 17 unanswered points to the good. Wales international Hook got Perpignan off the mark with a penalty six minutes before half-time and landed another just after the restart to keep the visitors in contention. However, Dragons fly-half Tovey, relishing the opportunity to outshine his illustrious opposite number, responded with a brace of drop goals and what hope Perpignan had of turning the game around ended when scrum-half Florian Cazenave saw yellow on 63 minutes. The Catalans did register a late try through Adrien Plante, which Hook converted, but that was not even enough to earn the Top 14 outfit a losing bonus point.

Meanwhile, Bayonne made it two wins from two in Pool 3 with a surprisingly facile 20-3 victory over French rivals Bordeaux Begles at the Stade Jean Dauger. Bayonne, who lie 11th in the Top 14 standings, one place below Bordeaux, eased into an early six-point lead courtesy of a brace of penalties from fullback Sylvain Bouillon. The hosts' dominance gradually grew and they earned themselves a penalty try midway through the opening period which was easily converted by Bouillon.

Bordeaux, who were routed by Wasps at home last weekend, finally troubled the scoreboard six minutes into the second half when fly-half Camille Lopez landed a penalty but the visitors then lost lock Francois Tisseau to the sin bin and Bayonne took advantage, engineering a score for flanker Dwayne Haare. Bouillon converted once again and even though Bayonne flanker Julien Puricelli was then yellow carded on 63 minutes, the home side were allowed to cruise home.
