Vettel 'tried everything' to get pole
Sebastian Vettel said he "tried everything" to beat Lewis Hamilton to pole position at the German Grand Prix but still came up short.
Vettel set his fastest lap of the weekend at the end of qualifying but Hamilton still beat him to the top spot by 0.103s on his last attempt. The Red Bull is expected to have the edge over the Mercedes in Sunday's race, but Vettel said he still could not match the W04 in qualifying.
"Congratulations to Lewis, he did a great job and we were quite close," he said. "I think I tried everything I had, the car felt fine but we were struggling a little bit in the first sector this afternoon. We lost a little bit of time there and tried to catch up but it wasn't enough."
However, Vettel is confident Red Bull has slashed Mercedes' qualifying advantage since the last race and is confident he can reverse the order on Sunday.
"It looks like we were closer to them than we were in Silverstone so we have made some progress and we have all confidence for tomorrow. We had a good run on Friday looking at the race, so I think we have done our homework. We put the car on the front row. It wasn't quite enough for pole position but we should have a good race from there, I'm looking forward to it."
