Fernando Alonso said he was pleased with second place in the German Grand Prix but that he couldn't challenge Lewis Hamilton towards the end of the race.

Alonso started fourth and managed to jump Sebastian Vettel at the start of the race before an error put him behind the Red Bull. He recovered to pass Vettel in to turn one and later jump Mark Webber in the pit stops but having kept Hamilton honest for much of the race the McLaren pulled away in the final stint on the medium tyre. Alonso said that he had to settle for second as his car was less competitive on the prime compound.

"I think in the last stint we could not get any closer to Lewis," Alonso said. "I think with the medium tyres we were not too quick so we just controlled the gap with Mark and secured second place. For us it was a fantastic race, a fantastic Sunday again. We struggled a little bit in qualy being fourth yesterday but today again the car showed great pace and great degradation with the tyres so we can keep the pace of the leaders. We jumped Vettel on the track and Mark in the pit stop and it was great."

Alonso also said that he was pleased with the run that he was on, with three consecutive top-two finishes.

"The second place [in Germany], after the win in Silverstone and the second place in Valencia, it is definitely a good moment in the championship for us, so next week [in Hungary] we have another opportunity."
