Venezuela GP Lazarus joins GP2

Venezuela GP Lazarus has been granted entry to the GP2 grid for the 2012 and 2013 seasons in replacement of Super Nova.

The Italian team has joined forces with a consortium of Venezuelan sponsors to run under a Venezuelan licence in GP2 this season. The team was only founded in 2009 but has experience in GP2 from supporting DPR that year before moving on to compete in Auto GP in 2010 and 2011, finishing second last season. Team principal Tancredi Pagiaro said that Lazarus was looking forward to the challenge of stepping up to the feeder series.

"We are very excited to be part of GP2 and I would like to thank first of all Venezuela GP and the organisers for giving us this entry," he said. "This Series is the most prestigious and competitive category after F1. I'm very proud and I thank very much the pool of Venezuelans sponsors who have allowed us and an entire country like Venezuela to enter into such a prestigious championship as GP2. We know this will be a big challenge but we are ready for it and cannot wait to get started."

GP2 Series CEO Bruno Michel welcomed Lazarus and said he was confident the team would be immediately competitive.

"We are pleased to welcome Venezuela GP Lazarus to GP2 Series," Michel said. "They are a great addition to our competitive field of thirteen teams. Tancredi Pagiaro and most of his staff have been involved in GP2 in the past years and I am sure they will be able to be on pace very quickly."

Super Nova leaves the series having been one of the original teams competing in the inaugural season in 2005.
