Ominously for his competition in India, newly crowned world champion Sebastian Vettel said his Red Bull RB7 felt good from the outset at the Buddh International Circuit as he set the second quickest time of the first day of free practice.

"The car felt good straight from this morning," said Vettel. "It was about getting into the rhythm of the circuit, getting to know the car around here and it seemed to work quite well and the long run seemed good so we'll have to see.

"It was a good challenge, very dusty to start with but the track seems fun, especially the wide entries giving options to the drivers. It's so dusty off line in particular is very tricky and if a car in front goes off and comes back it carries all the sand on the line so it's not easy and it will be the story of the weekend so we have to make sure we stay on line. Unfortunately we have to live with it but I think it will improve throughout the weekend so it shouldn't be a big, big problem. Even without DRS it should be a god circuit to overtake with long straights and wide entries."

Vettel goes into this weekend's inaugural Indian Grand Prix in search of a record number of season pole positions but he said it is not on his mind going into Saturday's qualifying session.

"It's still early and I think the circuit is quite challenging, quite tricky so it doesn't forgive a lot of mistakes so we have to be very focused tomorrow."
