Sergio Perez took the full blame for his retirement from the Japanese Grand Prix after spinning off while trying to pass Lewis Hamilton.

Perez's race ended on lap 18 when he tried to pass Hamilton at the hairpin and lost control of his Sauber. He had completed a successful move on Hamilton at the same corner earlier in the race, but said the McLaren driver blocked his route on the second attempt and he lost control.

"I feel very sorry for the team," Perez said. "It worked well when I got passed Lewis Hamilton for the first time on lap six, but then it didn't when I tried it again. Lewis went quite late to the inside and I had only room on the outside. But it certainly was my mistake."

Perez started the race from fifth on the grid but said things started to go wrong when Romain Grosjean took out Mark Webber ahead of him in the first corner.

"The race didn't start too well for me either when Romain Grosjean caused a mess and I lost positions."
