Phil Mickelson is a world star in his own right, but has spent much of his career in the shadow of a certain Tiger Woods.

The golf bug bit Mickelson early and by the time he had graduated from university, he was seen as a future major champion. Before securing his psychology degree he had already won a PGA Tour event, the Tucson Open in 1991, and he turned pro in 1992.

Mickelson was a regular winner on the PGA Tour, his first as a pro being at Torrey Pines in 1993, but that major title proved somewhat elusive. 41 majors came and went, with Mickelson squandering decent positions on more than one occasion, before he finally achieved his goal when winning the Masters in 2004.

A second Masters success came in 2006, which followed on from his win in the 2005 US PGA Championship. Victory in the US PGA Championship at Baltusrol came courtesy of a quite stunning chip from a shocking lie on the side of the 18th green - a shot Mickelson is famed for.

A couple of serious injuries have hampered Mickelson, a broken leg in 1994 and a wrist problem in 2007, but he has spent the longest amount of time in the world top ten without being crowned No. 1.

He started 2010 in disappointing fashion, with his focus clearly on his wife's and mother's battles with cancer, but showed his class by claiming his third Masters crown at Augusta in April - with the tide turning in his battle with Lee Westwood courtesy of a quite stunning blind approach shot from behind the trees.

He had to wait three years for his next major championship - but it came at the Open, an event he had long thought he would never have the game to win. A final round 66 at Muirfield, good enough for a three-shot triumph, dispelled that foolish thinking.

One leg short of becoming the sixth player to win all four of golf's grand slams, only the US Open continues to elude Mickelson. After six runner-up finishes - the last coming at Merion in 2013 - winning his home championship will likely be the primary focus of the remainder of his career.

Career high: Winning the Masters, his first major, after a string of near misses. His career dream was to win the Masters and he achieved it in 2004.

Career low: His cavalier approach has won him a huge amount of fans, but it cost him dear in 2006. He led the US Open by a shot standing on the 18th tee and instead of playing safe he pulled out his driver and carved the ball wildly into the rough. He played the hole like a hacker and duly double bogeyed, when a par would have secured him victory.

Quote: "I still am in shock that I did that. I just can't believe I did that. I'm such an idiot," he said of his wild tee shot in the 2006 US Open that cost him victory.

Trivia: Once gave a spectator $200 after one of his shots crashed into the crowd and smashed the spectator's watch.
