Mickelson's reason for withdrawing from the event, which pits the year's four major champions against each other over 36 holes, is believed to be due to a scheduling conflict.

However, the PGA of America has confirmed the participation of Masters champion Adam Scott, US Open winner Justin Rose, and Jason Dufner, who triumphed at the US PGA Championship a fortnight ago.

If a current major champion cannot attend, the Grand Slam of Golf holder receives the initial invitation before the Major Champions Points List, which charts the performance throughout the year of active major champions, is used to complete the field.

Mickelson will be replaced by defending champion Padraig Harrington, who won the event in 2012 as well as finishing runner-up in both 2007 and 2008.

The Grand Slam of Golf will take place at the Port Royal Golf Course on October 15 and 16.
