Phil Mickelson missed out on the course record at the Deutsche Bank Championship, and he shares the lead with Brian Davis after the pair each carded an eight-under-63 after the opening day.

Open champion Mickelson stroked in seven birdies in his first nine holes to make the turn in 28 shots, and the American looked destined to become only the sixth man in PGA Tour history to shoot a round of 59.

However, both that achievement and the TPC Boston course record of 61 alluded Mickelson as his final nine holes were not as strong as his first. He dropped two shots and made one birdie along with an eagle.

Mickelson was set to hold a huge lead, but instead he is level with Davis, and they both have a one-shot advantage over Kevin Stradler, while Hunter Mahan is six-under and two shots behind.

World No. 1 Tiger Woods kicked off his event with a three-under-68, only making four birdies after showing no signs of the back problems he suffered at The Barclays.

Masters champion Adam Scott is two-over after a round of 73, with American youngster Jordan Spieth making a good start with a four-under-67.

Lee Westwood is well-placed at five-under, with Sergio Garcia starting his round late in the day and finishing two shots off Mickelson. US Open champion Justin Rose is one-under, as is Rory McIlroy.
