Profile

Long considered one of the most talented players of his generation, Adam Scott took his career to the next level with a long-awaited maiden major victory at the 2013 Masters Tournament.

The Australian, having taken the route favoured by many of his countrymen and undertaken his professional apprenticeship on the European Tour, headed to the PGA Tour around the turn of the millennium with high expectations. Having worked closely with Tiger Woods' coach, Butch Harmon, Scott was said to be among the first young players to come through using the American's swing as a blueprint for their own success.

Major championship triumph did not follow for Scott as it did for Woods, however. A consistent winner of regular tour events - he would win at least once each year between 2001 and 2012 - the majors would prove a different matter, with a tied-third finish at the 2006 US PGA Championship his best result for many years.

A switch to a long putter in late 2010 would change his fortunes, reinvigorating his game by shoring up his close range putting. He finished runner-up at the Masters in 2011 (and perhaps would have won, but for Charl Schwartzel's historic finish) and challenged again in Georgia a year later. Then, at the Open Championship, Scott led through three rounds - before four bogeys in his final four holes saw him lose the Claret Jug by a single shot to friend Ernie Els at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

Disappointed but unbowed by that collapse, he finally broke into the winner's circle at Augusta six months later - defeating Angel Cabrera at the second hole of a play-off to do something his idol, Greg Norman, never managed and become the first Australian ever to win the Masters.

Career high: Winning the Masters in 2013 - birdieing the 18th hole in regulation to reach a play-off, befort holing another birdie attempt at the 10th to win the fabled green jacket.

Career low: Managing to lose the Open in 2012, having been four shots ahead with four holes to play.

Quote: On winning the Masters: "We are a proud sporting country, and like to think we are the best at everything, like any proud sporting country. But you know, golf is a big sport at home. It may not be the biggest sport, but it's been a sport that's been followed with a long list of great players, and this was one thing in golf that we had not been able to achieve.

"So it's amazing that it's my destiny to be the first Aussie to win, just incredible."
